Project for Enhancing the Mechanism for Sustainable Community Based Tourism Development in the North Region (2016-2021)

tourismSince the 1960s, tourism has become a major industry of the Dominican Republic, thanks to the development of hotels and resorts in the northern area of the country. However, this development excluded local business from the industry, leaving little benefit for the local people.

Given this background, the government of the Dominican Republic requested for JICA’s technical assistance to develop a model of sustainable tourism in the north region. This project which is called “Project for Enhancing the Mechanism for Sustainable Community Based Tourism Development in the North Region” aims to promote community-based tourism (CBT) in 14 provinces in the north. While coordinating with public and private sectors, this project aims to:

  1. Analyse current local cultural attractions and introduce a community-based participation approach;
  2. Establish strategies and methods to promote CBT in the northern region;
  3. Implement action plans to promote CBT at the local level; and
  4. Develop a mechanism to promote CBT in the northern region.
