Comprehensive Outreach and Fish Breeding Project, Philippines
Milkfish is the national fish of the Philippines that has been traditionally cultivated in brackish water ponds. JICA commissioned IC Net to produce quality milkfish fry and increase the profitability of production so that milkfish farmers’ income would be enhanced through stable production. IC Net implemented the project in three provinces for three years in cooperation with the National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center (NIFTDC), the Local Government Units (LGUs), the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional offices, and selected fish farmers. The project activities included continuous technical training in BFAR-NIFTDC, on-site pilot demonstration of different culture technologies, and regular workshops and meetings among stakeholders. The project also published several manuals such as Extension Workers Training Manual, Technical Manual for Milkfish Hatchery Operation, Technical Manual on Water and Soil Quality Monitoring, Milkfish Farming Technology and Management, and Economic Management of Milkfish Hatchery. These manuals were distributed to the stakeholders.
